Any student, faculty, or staff with a temporary or permanent mobility impairment is eligible to purchase or obtain an OSU Disability Permit. The University requires all faculty, staff and students who wish to utilize disability parking to obtain an OSU Disability permit rather than using the state placard along with a regular “A”, “B”, or “C” permit. The purpose for this policy is to help identify where disability spaces are needed, regulate the use of these spaces to ensure they are available for those who need them, as well as to discourage abuse by people “borrowing” a state placard issued to another person.
APPLYING AND REQUIRED INFORMATION - NEW CUSTOMERS
To apply for a disability parking permit, please
submit a photocopy of the Registration Form for a State Placard,
along with an application for Disability Parking.
A copy of the state placard registration will be kept on file
and will not need to be resubmitted each year. When the State
placard expires, a copy of the replacement registration should
be submitted with the annual application. Disability
placard registration copies and parking permit applications
can be mailed to: Transportation & Parking Services, 160
Bevis Hall, 1080 Carmack Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43210. Disability
placard registration copies can also be faxed to (614) 292-1660.
State Disability placards are available from the Bureau of
Motor Vehicles; information/applications can be found on the
web at
The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles Disability Parking Placards
page. Applications may also be downloaded from the BMV
web site and taken to any local license agency or mailed to
the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, P.O. Box 16521, Columbus,
OH 43216-6521, along with the required processing fee of $3.50.
Disability placards are valid for the length of time prescribed
by the physician, not to exceed five years.

PERMANENT
DISABILITY PARKING
Central Campus permanent disability
parking permits allow parking in all campus area garages
(except Hospitals), in a general, non-reserved disability
space and in any non-restricted “A,” “B,” or “C” space.
The West Campus permanent disability parking permit allows
parking
on West
Campus before 4:00p.m. only and Central Campus with garage
access after 4:00 p.m. (excluding Hospitals Garage)
TEMPORARY DISABILITY PARKING
Customers requiring a temporary disability permit for less than one month need to have a T&P disability request form filled out by their doctor. Prescription notes are not accepted documentation for a temporary disability.
Any disability requiring more than 1 month must obtain a temporary
disability placard from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Information
and applications can be found on the web at The
Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles Disability Parking Placards
page. Applications may also be downloaded from the BMV
web site and taken to any local license agency or mailed it
to the Ohio Bureau of Motor vehicles, P.O. Box 16521, Columbus,
Ohio 43215-6521, along with the required processing fee of
$3.50. The disability placard will be valid for the length
of time prescribed by the physician. Once this placard is
received, a copy should be provided to T&P with the application
for Temporary Disability parking. A temporary disability permit
will be issued for the same amount of time listed on the state
placard.
All undergraduate students granted temporary disability parking will be required to park on West Campus and utilize the Handivan Service.
Please note: There are license plate-specific, reserved disability spaces throughout campus. These spaces are reserved 24 hours a day; please do not utilize these spaces. Permanent and Temporary Disability Permits are not authorized to park in “restricted” spaces, defined as state vehicle spaces, load zones, fire lanes, and other specifically designated spaces. Also, if parked at a meter, all fees must be paid.
PARKING SPACE MARKINGS
The hashed area directly next to the designated disability parking space is considered to be part of the disability parking space; this area allows individuals with mobility impairments to enter/exit the vehicle. Vehicles found parking in these areas will be cited and may be towed.
