GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
If you plan to ride your bicycle on campus, registration
is free and strongly encouraged. A registered bike that is lost or
stolen is more likely to be found and returned. Please contact The Ohio State University Police Department if you wish to register your bike.
BIKE RACKS
Bike racks are located throughout campus providing cyclists with a convenient
place to secure their bikes. Bicycles should be locked to a bike rack using
a u-bolt lock and cable combination. Please do not lock your bike to fences,
signposts, disability ramps, stair railings, or trees. Bikes
locked in places other than bike racks may impede pedestrian or vehicular
traffic and may be impounded.
RULES OF THE ROAD
Bicyclists must obey traffic laws that apply to motor vehicles. For example,
cyclists should always ride with traffic. Cyclists must also obey traffic
lights, signs, speed limits, and lane markings. For a complete list
of bicycle traffic laws, contact the OSU Police Department at 614-292-2121.

BIKE REMOVAL
If bikes are left unattended for an extended
period of time, it is presumed that they have been abandoned.
To let bike owners know that their bike is considered abandoned
and may be impounded, Transportation & Parking
Services hangs a bright tag on the bike's handlebars, indicating
that the bike must be moved by a specific date. Abandoned and
illegally parked bikes often impede pedestrian traffic and prevent
routine maintenance in the area.
Bikes are "tagged" and impounded at two different times during the year:
- Tagged: Second week in May Impounded: After Spring Commencement
- Tagged: First week in August Impounded: After Summer Commencement
Please note: If an illegally parked or abandoned bike presents a vehicular or pedestrian hazard or prevents access to facilities, it will be impounded immediately. To release a bike, the owner must show proof of ownership and pay a $25.00 fee. |
