For Pedestrians
Respect Right of Way
- When not in a crosswalk, yield the right of way to all traffic.
- Leave room for the vehicle to slow or stop before stepping off the curb or entering the street.
Respect Crosswalks
- Be aware of traffic in the area when crossing the street, even in a crosswalk.
- Cross only at corners or marked crosswalks
- Stop. Look left, then right, then left again before stepping into the street.
- Wait on the sidewalk until all vehicles go by. Then recheck the roadways as described above.
- Do not jump out, suddenly leave the curb, or run onto a crosswalk into the path of an oncoming vehicle which is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard.
- Pedestrians on bicycles should follow the rules of the roadway.
- Bicyclists should never ride in the crosswalk or sidewalk.
Respect Sidewalks
- Ohio law states that pedestrians on sidewalks have the right of way.
- Vehicles exiting parking garages or lots should yield to pedestrians crossing.
Respect Intersections
- Use pedestrian controlled intersections.
- The “WALK” light means you may proceed across the roadway.
- Vehicles are to give you the right of way.
- The “DON”T WALK” light means you should not start across the roadway, but if you are already in a crosswalk, you may continue to cross the street.
